Made by Tokyo on the blade with serial number & 2 inspection marks on the end of the pommel. Birdhead pommel with contoured grips held by screws with hooked crossguard. Made by Tokyo on the blade with serial number & 3 inspection marks on the end of the pommel. Birdhead pommel with contoured grips held by screws with hooked crossguard. Bright fullered blade that was reworked//blued with a 'test mark' (imprinted dot) next to the maker mark with light sharpening. Metal scabbard with tubular tip with some areas of patina. From the collection of J. Cheri who purchased many of his items from R. Labar. Similar to LB-76, Rated 1 (common) but this one has been reworked/blued which is not listed in Raymond Labar's book. Made by Kokura/Osaka (broken die) on the blade with the serial number on the end of the pommel. Bright fullered blade with staining and light sharpening. Blued unfullered blade with no sharpening. Left grip has a small remaining piece of aluminum attached possibly used as school/training bayonet. No scabbard. Japanese Type 30 Bayonet - Jinsen (LB-162)
Made by Jinsen on the blade with the serial number on the end of the pommel. There is also a 'o' marked on the pommel and two 'o' markings on the tang to signify second class use, special wartime inspection. Straight slab grips held by rivets with straight crossguard. Crudely made blued unfullered blade with light sharpening. Rectangular wooden scabbard with no major cracks or chips. LB-162, Rated 4 (scarce) by Raymond Labar's book. Rarity: R3+ Condition: VG+ Price: $425 |
British 1916 Japanese Type 30 Bayonet (LB-289)
Japan sold 150,000 rifles and bayonets to England during WWI for Land Service and the Royal Navy in 1914-1915 for use with the rear echelon troops when there was a lack of British made rifles. Most of the rifles and bayonets that Great Britain bought were sold in 1916 to Russia and made their way to Finland and then lost forever. Few of these Arisaka bayonets were still marked with British regimental markings on the pommel or grips and this piece is marked YHTS.97 (Yeomanry Hampshire Regt., 97) on the side of the pommel. Handle has some patina and the blade has some staining. Blued scabbard with some patina. An extremely rare Type 30 bayonet variation. LB-289, Rated 7 (very rare) by Raymond Labar's book. No maker on the blade with the school kanji on both sides of the blade. Birdhead pommel with contoured grips with hooked quillion. Crudely made bright fullered blade with light sharpening.
