German Pre-WWI Imperial Bayonets

German 1810/20 Hirschfanger Bayonet
No maker.  Crown over H on the top of the handle and blade.  Marked '27' on the crossguard and 'VI' under the mortise slot and '34' on pommel.  Brass handle with steel leaf spring and dings on around handle from using as a hammer.  Long slab blade with staining and several chips and nicks along the edge.  No scabbard.  Overall length is 26.5" and blade length is 21.25".  Very rare.

​German 1846 Baden Snipers Hirschfänger Bayonet
Original marker and date have been removed from the ricasso.  Brass handle with circular grooves with long mortise slot on the left side of the handle with missing steel steel leaf spring release.  Long unfullered slab blade with most original finish remaining.  Leather scabbard with brass fittings.  Very rare bayonet.

German 1852 Wurttemberg Gendarme Shotgun Bayonet
Made by Weyersberg and not dated for Wurttemberg.   Double muzzle ring for use on a shotgun.  Brass handle with steel leaf spring release.  Crossguard serial numbered '436'.  Fullered blade with areas of light pitting.  Leather scabbard with top brass fitting with broken off frog stud and the bottom fitting has been replaced with a steel fitting.  Very rare bayonet.

German 1860 Fusilier Bayonet
Made by Clauberg and dated FW61 on the blade and bottom of the crossguard and on the leather of the scabbard.  Brass handle with diagonal grooves with 5049 on back of handle.  Matching numbers on the scabbard marked S.A.C.400. and 400 on the crossguard (previous regimental number was removed).  Long quillback blade with no sharpening.  Leather scabbard with brass fittings.

German 1860 Fusilier Navy Bayonet
Made by Clauberg and dated W68 on the blade and bottom of the crossguard.  Brass handle with diagonal grooves with 3993 on back of handle.  Matching numbers I.W.D.87 on the crossguard and scabbard frog stud. Long quillback blade with no sharpening.  Leather scabbard brass fittings.  Rare bayonet to find with matching numbers.

German 1860 Fusilier Navy Bayonet
Made by A & E Holler and dated FW61 on the blade and bottom of the crossguard.  Brass handle with diagonal grooves with 3295 on back of handle.  Crossguard marked S.B.3.14.  Long quillback blade with no sharpening.  Leather scabbard with throat marked S.A.C.430. with frog stud marked I.W.D.477 and leather dated FW61 with serial number 4572.

German/Danish 1855/63 Hirschfänger Bayonet
No maker with crown over 'S' on the blade and pommel.  Brass handle with release spring with mortise slot marked with regimental marking 2.1.C.D.5 and serial number 703 on the side of the handle.  Central fullered blade.  Made for the Navy 1853/66 rifle. Only 2,540 were bought by the Schleswig Holstein rebels in Liege in wars with Denmark.  No scabbard.

German 1864 Baden Bayonet
Marked Gebr. Weyersberg on one side of blade and Solingen on the other and inspection marked with a symbol in an 'O' on the crossguard and blade.  Serial number '821' on the crossguard.  Solid brass handle with leaf spring and mortise slot that runs along the top of the handle.  Regimentally marked 'JB1033' on the underside of quillion.  Large central fuller down both sides of the blade with the fuller running all the way through the blade tip.  No scabbard.  Very rare.

German 1865 Bavarian Border Guard Hirschfänger Bayonet
Made by Alex Coppel (with scales symbol).  No date or proof marks on bayonet or scabbard.  Knurled leather grips with 3 rivets.  Straight fullered blade with no sharpening.  Unusual in that there is no quillback on the blade like typical Hirschfangers.  Leather scabbard with steel fittings with excellent unusual leather frog.  Made for the Werder rifle system.  Very rare bayonet.

Issued only to the Jäger units.  No markings.  Leather grips held by 3 rivets with the larger diameter muzzle ring.  Guard marked 3.J.5.429.  Numbered 2845 on the back of handle.  Quillback blade with a couple small areas of pitting.  Reproduction scabbard with no markings.

German 1869 Werder Bayonet - 1 Step
Made by W&ST, Solingen.  Brass handle with leaf spring with 1 step machined into the back of the handle and the muzzle ring screw is missing.  Crossguard marked 12.R.4. and serial number 80935 on the other side.  Fullered blade with graying and pitting with light sharpening.  The leather scabbard with brass fittings is marked 16904 / 10.J.R.e on the bottom fitting and has some areas of separated stitching and old glue repairs.

German 1869 Werder Bayonet - 1 Step
Made by Alex Coppel.  Brass handle with leaf spring with 1 step machined into the back of the handle and the muzzle ring screw is missing.  Crossguard marked 6.L.414.60 and serial number 91447 on the other side.  Fullered blade with some graying and pitting with light sharpening.  The leather scabbard with brass fittings is marked B.10.R.10.61 on the bottom fitting.

German 1869 Werder Bayonet - 2 Step
No maker.  Brass handle with leaf spring with 2 step machined into the back of the handle modified to allow use with the 1869 modified Werder and 1888 Commission rifles (very scarce modification). Crossguard marked 1.A.F.3.147 and serial number on the other side.  Fullered blade with heavy patina overall.  The bayonet could use a good cleaning.  No scabbard.  The hardest to find Werder variation.

Luneschloss and dated W72 on the blade and bottom of the crossguard.  Leather grips held by 5 rivets with the larger diameter muzzle ring which has been bushed from 21.5mm to 17.5mm.  Guard marked with x'd out 12.J.L.2.60. Quillback blade with some light sharpening.  No scabbard.  Rare bayonet.

Issued only to the Jäger units.  Made by P. D. Luneschloss and dated W70 on the blade and bottom of the crossguard.  Leather grips held by 5 rivets with the larger diameter muzzle ring which has been bushed from 21.5mm to 17.5mm.  Guard marked 10.J.1.14 and scabbard marked 9.J.E.2.58.  The pommel is also marked with very unusual regiment P.K.V.St.41.  Quillback blade with a couple small areas of light pitting.  Leather scabbard with steel fittings.  Rare bayonet.

German 1865/71 Prussian Faschinenmesser Bayonet
Made by Coppel and dated W03 on the blade spine for the Prussians.  This was a 1865 Faschinenmesser bayonet that was bushed from 21.5mm to 17.5mm to fit the Jägerbuchse 1871 rifle and has a flat edge on the right side of the muzzle ring.  Crossguard is marked E.3.146 for the Prussian Eisenbahn (railway) used during WWI. Long heavy fullered blade with some staining, light pitting and light sharpening.  Black leather scabbard with brass fittings marked E.21.139.  Extremely rare bayonet.

German 1865/71 Prussian Faschinenmesser Bayonet
Made by V. Jung and dated 1869 on the underside of crossguard and FW70 on the blade spine for the Prussians.  This was a 1865 Faschinenmesser bayonet that was bushed from 21.5mm to 17.5mm to fit the Jägerbuchse 1871 rifle and has a flat edge on the right side of the muzzle ring.  Brass handle with leaf spring with serial number 1389 on the back of the handle.  Crossguard is marked 7.P.R.82. Long heavy fullered blade with some staining, light pitting and light sharpening.  Black leather scabbard with brass fittings marked 82.P.5.230.  Extremely rare bayonet.

Simson which is undated with G.S. on the blade spine and end of pommel.  Brass handle with leaf spring with the muzzle ring is reamed out and the mortise slot is extended.  Crossguard is marked B.1.P.4.184.  Long heavy fullered blade with some staining.  Black leather scabbard with brass fittings with old crease repair in the top third (well done) and marked B.1.P.4.68.  Extremely rare bayonet with very close non-matching numbers.

Simson which is undated with G.S. on the blade spine and end of pommel.  Brass handle with leaf spring with the muzzle ring is reamed out and the mortise slot is extended.  Crossguard is marked B.1.P.E.1.2.  Long heavy fullered blade with some staining.  Black leather scabbard with brass fittings with old crease repair in the center (well done) and marked B.1.P.E.3.92.  Extremely rare bayonet.

Made by Simson & Co. and dated AR94 for Saxony.  Brass handle with leaf spring on left side of handle.  G.S. marked on the pommel with inspecition markings on the pommel, crossguard and tang.  Crossguard is marked L.A.F.1.158.  Quillback blade with no sharpening.  Leather scabbard with brass fittings with throat marked 8.r.A.F.2.10.  Very rare bayonet for Saxony.

Made by Gebr. Weyersberg and undated (typical) for Wurttemberg.  Brass handle with leaf spring.  Centrally fullered blade with fullers which end before the tip of the blade (2nd model) with some staining and light sharpening.  Leather scabbard with brass fittings.  Matching numbers on the crossguard and scabbard fitting 13.P.2.65.  Comes with black leather frog with no markings.  Very rare bayonet.

German 1871 Wurttemberg Faschinenmesser Bayonet
Made by T. A. Hermes and dated 1897 for Wurttemberg.  Brass handle with leaf spring.  Crossguard marked t.A.XIII.93.  Centrally fullered blade which runs all the way through the tip (3rd model) with some staining and light sharpening.  There are three holes near the end of the blade which must have been used to mount the bayonet on a wall and were later filled in.  No scabbard.  Very rare bayonet.

Leather scabbard with brass fittings and Bavarian style frog bar.  No markings.  Fits the 1871 sword bayonet.  Overall length is 20 1/2" x 1 3/16" and the top fitting opening is 1 3/16" x 1/4".

Made by Weyersberg & Stamm and is undated (typical) for Bavaria.  Brass handle with leaf spring with some patina on the handle. Crossguard marked B.22.R.10.5 and serial number 3903 on the other side.  Fullered blade has some staining and light areas of pitting.  Leather scabbard with brass fittings with top fitting marked B.5.A.6.64.  Rare Bavarian model.

Made by Weyersberg & Stamm and is undated (typical) for Bavaria.  Brass handle with leaf spring. Crossguard marked B.17.R.8.38 and serial number 71720 on the other side.  number 398 is marked under the makers name.  Fullered blade has some staining and light sharpening.  Leather scabbard with brass fittings with top fitting marked 108.R.8.118.  Rare Bavarian model.

Made by Erfurt and dated W06 for Prussia.  2nd pattern model with two piece wood grips with light patina on the handle.  No regimental markings.  Long fullered quillback blade with some heavy sharpening on the left side of blade.  No scabbard.

Made by Erfurt and dated W01 for Prussia.  1st pattern model with one piece wood grips with wear and patina on the handle.  Long fullered quillback blade with light patina and heavy sharpening.  Leather scabbard with steel fittings.  Matching numbers 7.R.7.74 on the bayonet and scabbard.  Rare matching early quillback set.

German 1898 Kurzes KS98 Sawback Bayonet
Made by Schilling and dated 1913 for Prussia.  Checkered leather grips with shrinkage and pitting on the handle.  Fullered sawback blade with some staining and light sharpening.  Correct WWI metal scabbard with inspection marking on the frog stud with heavy pitting and patina.  Scarce maker and date combination.

Made by Haenel and dated O04 for Bavaria.  Wood grips with some patina on the handle and crossguard.  Fullered sawback blade with very light pitting and sharpening which has been cleaned overall.  No scabbard.  Rare Bavarian model.

2nd pattern model with low ears and flashguard (nA model).  Made by Gottlieb Hammesfahr marked with only the pyramid with a plus sign inside and dated W17 for Prussia.  Wood grips with patina on the handle and crossguard.  Fullered blade with staining and no sharpening.  Metal scabbard with some bluing remaining.  Light peppering overall on the bayonet and scabbard.  Comes with a black leather frog with no markings remaining.  Rare maker marking.

Made by Move-Werke, Walter & Co, Muhlhausen in Thr. and dated W15 for Prussia.  Wood grips with flashguard with small round oil hole.  Square fullered blade with most of its original bright finish remaining.  Crossguard wartime regimentally marked 2.56.68.  Correct WWI metal scabbard with much of the blued finish remaining.  Rare early model that is wartime regimentally marked.

Made by Gottlieb Hammesfahr with their rare 'OO' commercial marking on the ricasso with no date and just an inspection marking on the blade spine.  Wood grips with most finish remaining on the handle and crossguard.  Bright fullered blade with some light pitting and rounded tip.  Black painted metal scabbard with dent on the front.  Rare Hammesfahr logo model.

German WWI Ersatz Bayonets

On Hold - German 1916 Commercial Ersatz Bayonet (#1a model)
Carters #1a ersatz model made by Deutsche Maschinenfabrik A.G., Duisburg (Demag).  Marked Demag, Duisburg in circle on left side of blade and D.R.G.M. (German Registered Design) on the other.  Crudely made with riveted on wood grips and bowie-type blade with some light sharpening near the point.  No inspection markings so is probably a very rare private purchase piece.  Came with blade painted metal scabbard with leather belt attachment.  Extremely rare bayonet.

German 1916 Ersatz Bayonet (#17 model)
Carters #17 ersatz model which has normal 2 separate metal pieces welded together with the muzzle ring removed and a fullered blade.  Metal handle with no finish remaining.  Inspection marked on ricasso and top spine of blade.  Muzzle ring removed (rare conversion).  Fullered blade with some staining and light sharpening.  Metal scabbard with no finish remaining.  Rare ersatz model.

Carters #32 model has a solid tubular metal handle with frozen press stud.  Fullered blade with pitting, staining and sharpening.  Metal scabbard with about 90% black paint remaining with pitting and dents.  Rare ersatz model.

Carters #33 model has a solid tubular metal handle with filed off and frozen press stud.  Fullered blade with some pitting, staining and sharpening.  Metal scabbard with about 90% black paint remaining.  Rare ersatz model.

German 1916 Ersatz Bayonet (#56 model)
Carters #56 model with diagonal grooves on the black painted steel handle which were made for the Wurttemberg troops.  Unfullered slab bright blade with light sharpening.  Inspection marked on blade ricasso.  Metal scabbard with much of the original black paint remaining.  Very rare ersatz model.

German 1916 Ersatz Conversion of French 1874 Bayonet (#61 model)
Carters #61 model with a heavily modified French Gras 1874 wood handle and leaf spring replaced with a solid brass handle with oil slot on top.  The muzzle ring was partially removed and the quillion was removed.  Large cleaning hole on the side of the handle. Blade marked St. Etienne and dated 1882 on top of blade.  Pommel marked 'A. D. Hannover'.  Inspection marked on blade ricasso.  Metal scabbard with much of the original blued finish remaining with non-matching serial numbers.  Very rare ersatz model.

German WWI Modified Bayonets

German Modified French 1866 Bayonet
A French 1866 bayonet that was used by the Germans for behind the line troops.  Made by Tulle and dated 1867 with serial number 12667.  Brass handle with German regiment marking 87.L.II.1.25 on the crossguard.  Yataghan blade with some staining and no sharpening.  No scabbard.

German Marked Norwegian 1894 Bayonet
These are typically modified long bladed model 1916 Norwegian bayonets which were shortened to blade lengths of 215mm (9") except that they had German Waffenamt marked '84' on the crossguard (Kongsberg Vapen-Fabrikk from 1941-45).  The Norwegian Legion (Den Norske Legion) were issued these bayonets (made under German control) before they received their German weapons.  These bayonets are called 'Hird' bayonets after the Quisling troops and only about 3300 were produced.  Bright blade with some sharpening.  Blued metal scabbard marked '75'.

German Modified Portuguese 1885 Bayonet
Handle from a German ersatz bayonet (like Carter's No. 19) and the blade from a Portuguese 1885 Kropatschek bayonet.  Back of blade is marked Steyr, 1886 and has Portuguese cross on ricasso.  Yataghan fullered blade with some staining and sharpening.  German modified Portuguese scabbard with brass oblong frog stud.

German Modified Romanian 1893/1904 Bayonet
This is a Romanian 1893/1904 bayonet that has been modified by the Germans and had the muzzle ring removed.  Made by OEWG.  Has Romanian 'phoenix' symbol on one side of pommel and a marking of a '2' & 'G' in between 2 flags on the other side.  Serial number on the crossguard which is overstamped with J.REISS.  Pitting and staining on the fullered blade.  Green painted metal scabbard which is marked OEWG on the frog stud.

Made by Kirschbaum (Knight's head).  Black plastic grips with no mortise slot or leaf spring.  Double engraved with Bavarian 'In Treue Fest' motif on both sides of the slab blade.  Leather scabbard with nickeled fittings.  Comes with black dress frog.  Rare dress piece.

German 1871/84 Bavarian Personalized Engraved Dress Bayonet
No maker.  Wood grips held by two rivets.  Red felt in mortise slot.  Nearly all nickel finish remaining on the pommel and crossguard.  Crossguard personalize to 'F. Kunbele 11 K 14 R'.  Short fullered double engraved blade with Bavarian 'In Treue Fest' on both side with floral motifs with nearly all original nickel finish and no sharpening.  Leather scabbard with nickeled fittings.  Brown Officer's style frog with no markings on the back.  For use as a dress or off-duty piece and not meant to be mounted on a rifle.  Very rare personalize Bavarian dress piece.

German 1871/84 Dress Bayonet
Made by Coppel with an 'H' on other side of ricasso and 'AC' on bottom of blade.  Wood grips held by 2 rivets with some light pitting and about 30% of nickel finish remaining on the handle.  Press stud sticks slightly but still works.  Long fullered blade with about 85% nickel finish remaining and rough sharpening on both sides of blade.  No scabbard.  For use as a dress or off-duty piece and not meant to be mounted on a rifle.

1884/98 handle with long carbine style blade.  Blade marked Garantie Stahl (Guaranteed Steel).  Nickeled handle with wood grips held by two rivets.  Long carbine style blade with no sharpening.  Metal scabbard with about 40% black paint remaining.  Overall length is 362mm and the carbine blade is 242mm.  Very rare dress model.  For use as a dress or off-duty piece and not meant to be mounted on a rifle.

German Modified 1866 Chassepot Bayonet
Blade marked Mutzig and dated 1868.  Brass handle with leaf spring and press stud removed and marked 'SS' on pommel.  Top of handle marked 'PRO GLORJA PATRJA' MOMENTO ???.  Crossguard has been removed and replaced with brass floral acorn finales and elaborate clamshell with crossguard marked 'NOBLES' and the clamshell marked 'UBEUS' and the other side of crossguard marked 'SIWOW 1868'.  Chassepot blade with some staining and light sharpening.  German modified metal scabbard with inspection marking on oblong frog stud.  Very unusual customized piece.

Made by Eickhorn.  Brass handle with anchor marked folding clamshell with a locking device to snap into the scabbard.  Double engraved slab blade with naval floral scenes on both sides with some fading and light pitting.  Leather scabbard with brass fittings.  Very rare.

German 1908 Oberjäger Short Sword
No maker markings.  Brass handle with detailed eagle head pommel.  Unfullered blade with false edge tip with some light staining and not sharpening.  Leather scabbard with brass fittings with all stitches intact.  Black patent leather frog with some light craze cracking.  This unusual piece was the only Hirschfanger authorized for wear off-duty by Prussian Guard Jäger Battalion personnel connected with the forestry.  Very rare.
