FINLAND

Finnish 1925 M/91rv Socket Bayonet
These bayonets were shortened M/91 bayonets that were 4.9" (125mm) less in overall length and had the tip and fullers reshaped. The modifications took place from 1925-1935 with only 3,000 being made. This is one of the most obscure bayonets made by Finland for its armed forces. It is rarely encountered today as it served a purpose only with the M/91rv rifles. When the rifle was removed from cavalry service in 1935 most of the bayonets that were issued with it were scrapped. Very few examples survives.  Patina overall on the bayonet with serial number 114860 on the blade.  Leather scabbard with integral belt loop with small separation near the bottom metal tip.  Very rare bayonet.

Finnish 1942 Trials Bayonet
Made by Hackmann and Sk.Y on the right ricasso with =S= on the right crossguard.  Wood grips held by two slotted screws with oil hole in the pommel.  End of pommel is serial numbered '87'  Modified fullered blade with some staining and light sharpening.  Shortened blued scabbard with black frog marked '37'.  This bayonet was fashioned in this manner by modifying some m28/30 and m28/30/35 bayonets by shortening the blade and modifying the tip to be of a similar shape and length to the Sk.Y contracted m/39 bayonets. With the contracted company Veljekset Kulmalan Konepaja unable to produce enough bayonets of the m/39 type to meet requirements, the m28/29 bayonet was modified in a trials program in 1942 to see if it was feasible to use existing stocks of bayonets to meet the need. The project was then canceled in 1943.  Only 150 of these bayonets were made.  This is the hardest to find Finnish bayonet.

British Sten Mk II Spike Bayonet
The Sten Mk. II bayonet was fabricated out of sheet steel and utilized a rod-style blade copied from the No. 4 Mk. II socket bayonet.  Although the Sten rod was of a larger diameter, this enabled the bayonet to use the existing No. 4 Mk. II scabbard.  The large forward projection on the stamped spring steel catch serves as a fingerguard, so the bayonet can also be used as a hand weapon.  75,280 bayonets were believed produced during 1943–1944.  Made by N.J. Edmunds (S356) (20k) and Grundy Ltd. (S41) (56k).  Nearly all of the bayonets were believed scrapped, making period examples like this one quite rare today.  Other markings are the British War Department "Broad Arrow" showing ownership, as well as a letter 'Z' on the side of the body (the 'Z' significance is unknown).  Some found also marked with B & J Sippel Ltd (N152) who did the hardening and tempering of the bayonet.  Very nice bluing overall on the bayonet scabbard.  Green canvas frog with markings on the back.

Points to pay attention to for original models are the raised nib of the spring catch, as well as the shape & radius of the vertical extension of this latching spring.  The copies of the bayonet for the Sten MKII are almost handmade and the differences from the original stand out.  When observing the tip of the spike, the original is well shaped, but the copies are not so well done & are not uniform.  Please note the markings stamped on the bayonet body and the number stamped into the spike itself just forward of the body section, these marks are not present on the copies.

Buck made a very rare prototype wire cutter scabbard.  A scarce variant of the MPBS M9 was designed by M. Finn for the U.S. Army bayonet trials of 1986.  Phrobis won the competition with their design which, with some slight modifications, was adopted by the Army.  Paralleling this development was a secondary pattern with an external wire cutter mechanism.  Although this was possibly an improvement so far as the wire cutting capability, weight of the whole apparatus exceeded the maximum acceptable to the Army.  It is thought that 55 of the external wire cutting scabbards were manufactured and 40 sets of the green nylon suspension with Bianchi belt clip.  Rarer still is the green Bianchi "pancake" accessory pouch, of which only 15 were produced.  Because these scabbards were made in numbers equivalent to the 55 standard XM9 bayonets actually shipped to the Army during the trials, there was no "specific" bayonet supplied with this scabbard. The M9 which accompanies this scabbard is an early 3rd model Phrobis "3-Line" marked example (marked 'M9 over Phrobis III over U.S.A.). The pommel/catch assembly is that used on the XM9 trials bayonets, being made from a modified M7 pommel cap. Another unusual feature is the bayonet itself has never had the factory edge applied to the blade, indicating the bayonet was likely selected from those for test or evaluation purposes. The former owner of this example acquired it directly from Mr. Finn in 1988.

US M9 LanCay Bayonet - PI Model w/Gray Blade
Toward the end of the 1st contract in 1994, Lancay produced an M9 that exhibited major changes to the blade design that is obvious upon inspection.  The "step" on the back of the blade between the sawteeth and the guard was eliminated. Also the sawteeth were shortened.  Additionally, even though this knife obviously has a second contract, P.I. (product improved) blade type, the blade color remained the same dull grey finish of the first contract.  It also exhibits first contract labeling of the manufacturer (LanCay) instead of the 2nd contract type labeling (LAN-CAY) for a product improved blade.  The scabbard was the later 2 slot version without a sharpening stone with an angled screwdriver tip with the Fastex dated 1995.  There were only 1064 total M9's produced in this configuration to fulfill the 1st contract which makes this variation quite rare.

US M9 Lan-Cay Bayonet - Factory Sample
A few Product Improved bayonets have been found with no markings on the blade or end of the pommel and the blade is unfinished (ground and sharpened).  The blade has no fuller, has a black oxide finish and the scabbard is marked Lan-Cay and the Fastex is dated 1998.  It is thought that these few bayonets were removed or stolen from the factory by employees before the bayonets were finished for sale or were used by company executives for personal gifts.  Only a few have ever been.  These are very rare since only bayonets with full markings were used for Military or Commercial sale.
